  2. Democrat, born in Kinderhook, New York, of
  3. Dutch ancestry. He was a senator 1821-28,
  4. governor of New York State 1828-29, secretary
  5. of state 1829-31, minister to Britain
  6. 1831-33, vice president 1833-37, and
  7. president 1837-41. He initiated the
  8. independent treasury system, but his refusal
  9. to spend land revenues cost him the 1840
  10. election. He lost the 1844 Democratic
  11. nomination to Polk, and in 1848 ran
  12. unsuccessfully for president as the Free Soil
  13. candidate.
